Members of the Richelieu Club of Cornwall recently welcomed Cornwall native Lieutenant Sébastien Savard of the Royal Canadian Navy for a fascinating and inspiring presentation on military service, leadership, and Canada’s role in an increasingly complex world.
Opening his remarks, Lt. Savard drew a parallel between military service and community service. He noted that the members of the Richelieu Club already understood the meaning of commitment and generosity, and that his goal was simply to share another example of a life dedicated to serving fellow Canadians.
Drawing on his experience serving aboard naval vessels, Lt. Savard described the responsibilities of naval officers and the challenges of safeguarding Canada’s sovereignty across the world’s second-largest country. Particular attention was given to the strategic importance of the Arctic and the ongoing need for vigilance from coast to coast to coast. He also highlighted the Royal Canadian Navy’s ability to operate in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans while remaining ready to respond to international events and emerging threats.
Lt. Savard spoke candidly about the personal sacrifices required of military personnel, including deployments lasting from three to nine months far from home. Service members, he noted, must be prepared to answer the call whenever duty requires. He also discussed the challenge of keeping pace with rapidly evolving technologies that are transforming modern naval operations. Despite these demands, life at sea has provided him with opportunities to visit numerous countries across several continents and witness some of the world’s most spectacular sunsets.
A central theme of the presentation was leadership. Lt. Savard emphasized the values of memory, mastery, and mentorship, highlighting the importance of learning from the past, continuously developing one’s skills, and guiding the next generation. One statement that resonated strongly with the audience was: “The boat has to float, move forward and fight.” The expression served as a reminder that successful organizations must be resilient, effective, and prepared to meet challenges head-on.
He concluded by praising community service organizations whose members share a common commitment to service, dedicating their time and talents to improving the well-being of others and building stronger communities.
